The laboratory for Perceptual Dynamics takes a 'complex systems' view with respect to visual perception. In this view, ongoing internal processes in the brain lead to the experience of objects, textures, and shapes.

The brain processes constitute a necessary, but not sufficient condition for experience. In order to understand the sufficient conditions, the wider context in which this intrinsic dynamics (Gong et al., 2007; Tyukin et al., 2007) is embedded has to be taken into account. The wider context includes perceptual context (Alexander & Van Leeuwen, in press) and the actions of the system, ranging from eye-movements (Ito et al., 2003) to the active exploration of the environment (Gepshtein et al., 2007), as well as the history of prior experience and development (Jurica et al., 2007). The ultimate context for these processes is evolution (van Leeuwen, 2007).
